Crush Confessions with She-Wolf Reads

It's February, the month of love (or at least the month with a sappy love holiday in it) and we are celebrating with Crush Confessions. I've asked some awesome bloggers and writers to come up with a list of the boys (and girls) that make them swoon. From vampires to werewolves, jocks to Brits - we have something for everyone! So sit back, relax, and get ready to swoon.

Today's Crush Confessions comes from Lee at She-Wolf Reads. I've been a follower of Lee's blog for a while now. As you might be able to tell from the name of Lee's blog, she is a fan of books with a paranormal elements. I knew she would be the perfect person to ask to contribute to Crush Confessions. What else could her topic be but Shifters? Take it away, Lee!

First, I’d like to thank Thuy for inviting me to participate in this fun feature! Since I’ve been a longtime fan of Nite Lite Reviews, I was so very geeked to take part in this series. Thanks, Thuy!

Let me start by letting you know that I love shifter stories. They are, by far, my favorite paranormal creatures of legend. So without further ado and in no particular order, here are some of the coolest shifters I’ve come across in some of my favorite urban fantasy and paranormal reads. They’ve all, in some way, captured my imagination, my obsessive nature, and, dare I say, my heart?

1. The Cornick Clan (Yes, the entire clan)

This list should really be called the “Cornick Clan Memorial List” since Bran, Samuel, and Charles Cornick, werewolves from Patricia Briggs’ stellar Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega series, are, without a doubt, my favorite werewolves ever. EVER. I love these men. From Bran’s deceptive strength and power, to Samuel’s tortured past, to Charles’ necessary but personally devastating violence, I can’t get enough of these characters. I want a Bran novella, I was Team Sam for a long time, and Charles, oh Charles, his love for Anna just knocks me down every time. If you haven’t read either of these series, please do yourself a favor and start them. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

2. Jane Yellowrock – I like a woman with lots of guns and knives

Along with the Cornicks, I can’t get enough of Faith Hunter’s complex heroine, Jane Yellowrock. She’s a skinwalker but shares a soul with a mountain lion. Jane is the definition of an alpha female; she kicks ass, always shooting first and asking questions later. Yet under all the strength and balls and bravado is a woman who struggles with a dark and violent past she is only just beginning to understand. The series is layered, the world building deep, and the tone dark. Girl crush!

3. Jeff Christopher—The geek with some swagger

So Jeff Christopher is a supporting character in Chloe Neil’s Chicagoland Vampire series. He’s a tech geek with a crush, at least at the start of the series, on Neil’s heroine, Merit. Jeff stood out to me immediately. He’s a shifter but neither Merit nor you, the reader, knows exactly what he is. All you know is this geek is well-respected, dare I say even slightly feared, by members of the local werewolf pack. I love the dichotomy of a guy who is seemingly so beta being treated like such an alpha and you have no idea why. That is until House Rules, the seventh book in the series, where Jeff’s animal is revealed and it’s pretty stellar. I’m a geek at heart so Jeff is definitely my kind of shifter.

4. Suzume Hollis—The Smart-Ass Kitsune

I discovered Suzume in ML Brennan’s very original, darkly humorous, and just overall excellent American Vampire series. Suzume is Kitsune, a fox who can shift into a human as depicted in Japanese mythology. Suzume is sexy, tough, clever, and a smart ass. She’s the muscle, the alpha, and the potential love interest to her friend Fort, the beta, vegetarian vampire she’s charged with protecting in Generation V, the first book in the series. Why do I have a crush on this woman? She’s just super cool. Suzume has a comeback for everything, she’s street smart, has a bunch of geek references on hand, and is mischievous. Oh, and sexy. Can’t forget that. Can I be her?

5. Rourke—The Prehistoric Mystery Man

Similar to Jeff Christopher, Rourke has this mystery thing going for him. In Amanda Carlson’s action-packed UF series, the Jessica McClain series, Rourke is introduced as a badass shifter of unknown origins. His name alone makes some of the most alpha werewolves shake in their boots. Rourke is the epitome of alpha but what makes him great is that in his relationship with Jessica, the series heroine, he knows when to sit back and trust that she can take care of herself. I’m sure you’re wondering why I called him pre-historic…Well, it’s an exaggeration but the dude’s old, like, ancient. I loved that Carlson made his beast so old, so unusual, and so very solitary.

6. Jessica McClain—The Only Female Werewolf

Speaking of Rourke…let’s get to Jessica. She’s Rourke’s mate, and, most importantly, the only female werewolf in existence. Carlson introduces Jessica in a great novella that has her resilient heroine going to blows with a werewolf in a boxing ring. She knows she can’t win but she fights for the principle of it. It’s such a defining character moment that I immediately developed a serious girl crush on her. Jessica is scrappy, quick thinking, powerful, and has a strong moral compass. Backing down is never an option for Jessica. She always finds a way to do what’s right whether it be with brawn or with brains and always with her heart. I love this heroine.

7. Gemini—Find him in the yearbook as “Werewolf with the Coolest Power”

Cecy Robson’s Weird Girl series is pure, adrenaline-packed fun. While the series focuses on a group of powerful sisters, one of my favorite characters is Gemini, a werewolf from the local pack. Gemini doesn’t get much page time but when he is on screen, as it were, I always get very interested. He’s a bit of a beta, always a gentleman, and has a tattoo that gives him extraordinary power: he has two wolves in him. Enough said.

8. Mercy Thompson—The Shifter Queen

Again, Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series is in a class of its own. Mercy is a coyote and a mechanic who specializes in Volkswagens. What can I say about her that hasn’t already been said? She’s scrappy, loyal, caring, smart, independent, and gets in all kinds of trouble but always for the right reasons. Mercy is a survivor. She’s suffered a lot. And it’s devastating. But she comes out the other end of it strong and alive. In every book, Mercy steals my heart.

9. Jack Talent—I want more

Jack is the tortured enigmatic character who I became obsessed with in Kristen Callihan’s Winterblaze, book three in her Darkest London series. Jack has a painful past, a mysterious connection with a woman he seemingly can’t stand but obviously wants, and he’s a kind of shifter. And it’s precisely the “kind of” that intrigues me. Callihan created such a compelling and complex hero in Jack that at the end of Winterblaze, I knew I wanted more. I can’t wait to start the next book, Shadowdance.

10. Jena Crowe—Mother, Lover, Shifter

This one is a bit unfair to add but I’m going to anyway. Full disclosure: I haven’t yet read the full-length novel, Cambio Springs by Elizabeth Hunter, which features Jena. But I have read its prequel novella, Long Ride Home, and I was utterly moved by her. In this sparse story we follow the three-day road trip Jena takes with her children to return home to the mysterious town of Cambio Springs. Along for the ride is the ghost of her husband. At night, while the kids sleep in the back, she and her husband talk about their past and her future. It is deeply romantic and so very bittersweet. I loved Jena’s determination to do right for her kids, l loved relationship with her husband, I loved her strength. In the end we learn what Jena is and it is a tremendously hopeful scene that really demands you read the full-length novel. Which is what I’m going to do. Right now.

I hope you enjoyed this list! Now tell me who are some of your crush worthy shifters?

Thank you for participating, Lee. These are definitely some swoon worthy shifters.

A self-proclaimed “book-a-holic,” Lee was introduced to the genre of urban fantasy through the Sookie Stackhouse series.  After the first book, Lee was hooked and have not looked back.  Her favorite series are Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega by Patricia Briggs, Jane Yellowrock by Faith Hunter, the Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger, and the Disillusionist Trilogy by Carolyn Crane.  And these are just to name a few. Lee wants to use her blog to write down my thoughts on the books she reads. Hopefully, those thoughts are interesting.

Thank you to Thuy for inviting me to take part in her February Crush feature! I don’t think I’ve ever made a book boyfriend list before, and this was kind of fun! My crush category is New Adult, where a lot of the guys are hot and damaged.

Hope you meet a potential new favorite book boyfriend today!

9 NA Crushes:

Rock Stars

Kellan KyleThoughtless series by S.C. Stephens

Oh, Kellan. He is the front man for the D-Bags, a Seattle bar band that hits the big time. Kellan can be best described as sex on a stick. He meets Kiera and sparks fly, only she’s the girlfriend of his best friend.  I don’t always like Kellan’s behavior, but he’s such a charmer I can’t help but have a soft sport for him. This series is very angsty but addictive.

David FerrisLick by Kylie Scott

David Ferris is the guitarist for a very famous band called Stage Dive. Evelyn happens to be in Las Vegas celebrating her 21st birthday when the band is in town. She wakes up the next morning married to David with no recollection of the night’s events. It sounds cliché but the author sells this story and makes you root for David and Evelyn despite the odds. David defies the rock star image in a way and is actually hurt that Evelyn doesn’t remember the wedding.

Lost Boys

Dean HolderHopeless & Losing Hope by Colleen Hoover

Holder (as he is called) is strong and sensitive, loyal and protective. He takes things slow with Sky, and is patient and understanding as she’s working through some things. Plus, he goes running with her and cooks for her!  He has had some sadness in his life, and Sky is helping to turn that around. This quote is Holder in a nutshell:

“Sky, I'm not kissing you tonight but believe me when I tell you, I've never wanted to kiss a girl more. So stop thinking I'm not attracted to you because you have no idea just how much I am. You can hold my hand, you can run your fingers through my hair, you can straddle me while I feed you spaghetti, but you are not getting kissed tonight. And probably not tomorrow, either. I need this. I need to know for sure that you're feeling every single thing that I'm feeling the moment my lips touch yours. Because I want your first kiss to be the best first kiss in the history of first kisses.”  Colleen Hoover, Hopeless

Josh BennettThe Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay

Josh has been dealt some serious blows in his life, and he lies low and doesn’t let himself get too close to anyone. All of his family is dead. Nastya is new at school, and she also has her guard up due to a traumatic event, and in fact doesn’t speak at all. The two eventually find solace in each other. Josh lost everything but he’s surviving, and building furniture. If Josh was your boyfriend you’d always have a great chair to sit on or coffee table to prop your feet on.

Crush Confessions with Olivia at Nite Lite

It's February, the month of love (or at least the month with a sappy love holiday in it) and we are celebrating with Crush Confessions. I've asked some awesome bloggers and writers to come up with a list of the boys (and girls) that make them swoon. From vampires to werewolves, jocks to Brits - we have something for everyone! So sit back, relax, and get ready to swoon.

Today's confessions comes from Olivia who is a co-blogger here at Nite Lite.  I know that Liv has a soft spot for sports romances, so who better to ask about the hottest jocks in literature these days? Without further delay, let's see which jocks and athletes Liv is crushing on.

Maybe it is somewhat paradoxical that I would be writing about Hot Athletes when I had no clue who played in the Super Bowl a couple of weeks ago, but it seems that I can’t get enough of these bad boys of sports when contained within the pages of a book.  I seems I am always on the look out for a new sports romance with a HEA ending.

Here are five of my favorite hot athletes...

One of my favorites themes in Sports Romances is the bad boy in need of an image make-over.  It seems that the public loves an athlete with a wild reputation, though management doesn’t seem to agree, and brings in the image makeover specialist, who is always a sexy successful female, to help our tough bad boy make a change.

Cole Riley, Football
Playing to Win by Jaci Burton
Cole Riley has a short fuse and a tendency to party too hard, and does not always play nice with his teammates.  However, if he wants to keep playing professional football, he is going to need to make some changes.  Savannah Brooks is the sexy professional hired by his new team to help Cole clean up his act.  Initially, Cole comes across as a spoiled, arrogant jerk.  He claims he is misunderstood and it is all the fault of the press.   When Cole lets down some of his guard, you get to see that underneath he is a pretty amazing guy.  Hey, he cares about his family, a lot, which always counts for something in my book.  And he is one generous, and sexy lover.

Most romance novels are all about falling in love, but there are some that focus on second chances.  In Line of Scrimmage, Ryan Sanderson makes a Hail Mary attempt to save his marriage.

Ryan Sanderson, Football
Line of Scrimmage by Marie Force
I fell in love with Ryan Sanderson.  He arrives back home after being injured in his third championship game.  It is days before his divorce is final and his soon-to-be ex-wife is already planning her wedding to her fiance.  Ryan was a successful quarterback who realizes that all of the success is worth nothing if he doesn’t have Susannah.  Can he win her back before it really is too late? Ryan has a charming smile, a sense of humor, and a smokin’ hot body.  Unfortunately, football has gotten in the way of being able to focus on his wife and marriage.  As the story progresses, you realize that there is a sweet vulnerability below the surface that makes Ryan more than just what is on the outside.  It was this Ryan that shines through the story and just captured my heart.

Another scenario that crops up sports romances is the injured athlete and the female that seems to be there to help him through a tough time.

Reid Andrews, MMA
Seducing Cinderella by Gina L. Maxwell
This was the first romance I read with a Mixed Martial Arts athlete.  It didn’t take me long to want to say “Move over, Lucie, this hottie is mine.”  Reid Andrews is recovery from a shoulder injury.  It turns out that the physical therapist is his best friend’s “little” sister.  Reid is charming, and sexy and agrees to help Lucie with her own personal makeover if she helps him with his recovery.  Did I mention that Reid is sexy? Yep, definitely sexy.  And he also has this really sensitive, creative side.  I definitely want Reid as my book boyfriend.

Of course, then you still have the athlete who is happy to move from one meaningless sexual encounter to the next until they meet the one woman who turns their world upside down.

Jax Maris, MMA
Rules of Entanglement by Gina L. Maxwell
Apparently, Gina Maxwell writes some great book boyfriends since I also included Jax, Reid’s best friend, in this list.  I really couldn’t decide which one was hotter.  Both were great in such different ways. Jax would typically not be a guy that would catch my eye despite how good looking he was.  He is much more laid back and doesn’t seem to take anything very seriously.  However, when it comes to winning the girl, he is seriously focused.  The scene with the tequila shots and the picnic at the waterfall had me fanning myself.

Mick Riley, Football
The Perfect Play by Jaci Burton
Jaci Burton tends to write some hot athletes and I couldn’t leave off Mick Riley.  Mick’s story kicks off the Play-by-Play Series.  And similar to Jax, I probably would avoid Mick.  He seems like way too much of a playboy for my taste.  Fun to look at but not much more. However, throughout the book, I couldn’t help but really like Mick.  He was a successful athlete with strong family ties.  After awhile you realize that the public persona and the real man are two different people, and the man in real life was someone I really wanted to get to know better.

Liv loves reading Sci Fi/Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Sports Romance, Historical Fiction, Comics/Graphic Novels, Mysteries and the occasional cook book. She loves hanging out by water - oceans, lakes, waterfalls, hey, even a small brook will do in a pinch - and does her best thinking and writing there. She love movies, cooking with friends, and well, reading of course. Liv blogs at Nite Lite Book Reviews and you can also find her on Goodreads and Twitter.

Crush Confessions with Bookyurt

It's February, the month of love (or at least the month with a sappy love holiday in it) and we are celebrating with Crush Confessions. I've asked some awesome bloggers and writers to come up with a list of the boys (and girls) that make them swoon. From vampires to werewolves, jocks to Brits - we have something for everyone! So sit back, relax, and get ready to swoon.

Today's Crush Confessions comes from Bookyurt. Bookyurt is my go-to when it comes to all things pop culture, especially if it involves film or TV. So who better to extol the virtues of the Hollywood tortured bad boy? Take it away, Bookyurt!

The guys who make beat-up look good

I don't know what it is, but I just have a thing for boys with that look - that, I've been through some shit and made it through, look. That, I've been bruised and broken but haven't crumbled, look. Equal parts tough and vulnerable, to me that slightly tortured look is just super, super hot - so here are some of my favorite beat-up guys from the world of film and TV:

Britt from Terriers

So you may not have heard of Terriers - it was a show that lasted one season on FX - but in a lot of ways, it was basically the dude version of Veronica Mars. And that delectable rapscallion above? That's Britt (who may look familiar, if you watch Once Upon A Time), a criminal who straightens himself out (from full-on crooked robber to only slightly bent P.I.) all in the name of love - 'cause, as he puts it with a grin: "Love. It can mess your shit up."

Logan from Veronica Mars

Yes, Logan may be richie rich - but with an abusive Dad, a murdered girlfriend, and a Mom who throws herself off a bridge, I think it's fair to say the boy's been through some shit. And it left a mark, no question - it's there in his recklessness, his impulsiveness, but also in how he doesn't scare off easy. So when the shit hits the fan - like when, say, Veronica gets car-jacked, or cornered by Irish mobsters - where most guys would cut and run, Logan comes in swinging, no hesitation, no questions asked. Which, by the way, makes him exactly the kind of guy Veronica needs (as the movie will prove, I'm sure :).

Bruce Wayne/Batman

So I can't say which is my favorite iteration - but be it movies, TV or comics, Bruce Wayne is and always will be the guy who dedicates his life to the memory of his parents, who sweats and bleeds and gives up everything to become the hero who could have saved them. Now that's what I call love.

Michael from Underworld

Survivor's guilt? Check. Unwittingly caught up in a war between immortals, who then gets turned into a blood-thirsty monster against his will? Check. Everyone wants to kill him? Check. Yep, this poor boy can't catch a break - but the way he's just so unassuming, so quietly stoic through it all... No wonder Selene has such a thing for him :) (And by the way, can I just say how much I freakishly love these movies? Well, the first two, anyway - I like to pretend the other two don't exist...)

So there you have it - four boys who make beat-up look good. Now, who did I forget?

The Bookyurt's mission:

To slog through the plotholes so you don’t have to.

With one foot in the world of book lovers and one in the world of Hollywood, we do this for one reason and one reason only: to find good stories. Period. Full stop. Bar none. Be they on the page or the screen, shelved as Children’s, YA, or Adult, categorized as science fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy, steampunk, new weird, mysteries, thrillers, non-fiction, contemporary, what have you – it doesn’t matter to us. We’re just here to give you the story.

Crush Confessions with Tammy Blackwell

It's February, the month of love (or at least the month with a sappy love holiday in it) and we are celebrating with Crush Confessions. I've asked some awesome bloggers and writers to come up with a list of the boys (and girls) that make them swoon. From vampires to werewolves, jocks to Brits - we have something for everyone! So sit back, relax, and get ready to swoon.

Today's Crush Confessions comes from Tammy Blackwell, author of the Timber Wolves series. Tammy and I have never met but I follow her on Twitter and Facebook and know that she is seriously one funny lady. I know Tammy and I would be friends in real life because she picked a Crush Confession topic that I can totally get behind - 90s hearthrobs.  Let's see who Tammy picked.

The 90s were a magical time filled with flannel, grunge music, and the dreamiest of teen heartthrobs.

Huh? What’s that people not of the Catalano Generation who don’t agree with me? Sorry. I can’t hear you over all this awesome 30 Seconds to Mars music.

Jared Leto, 90s teen heartthrob, millennial rocker, 2014 Golden Globe winner, and Miss Tammy’s secret boyfriend.

Not enough to convince you? What if I told you our hottest hotties were all in movies based on literature? That’s right. We didn’t fall for just any pretty boy in a pair of Doc Martens; we wanted boys with substance. Need proof? Talk a long, loving gaze at these babes…

Crush Confessions with Read Now Sleep Later

It's February, the month of love (or at least the month with a sappy love holiday in it) and we are celebrating with Crush Confessions. I've asked some awesome bloggers and writers to come up with a list of the boys (and girls) that make them swoon. From vampires to werewolves, jocks to Brits - we have something for everyone! So sit back, relax, and get ready to swoon.

Today's Crush Confessions comes from Alethea at Read Now Sleep Later. Alethea has introduced me to many a swoon-worthy Brit, so it's no surprise that she chose to feature a British invasion for her Crush Confessions. Take it away, Alethea!

Happy almost-Valentine's Day! Thanks to Thuy for asking me to contribute my crush confessions.

Even my husband knows he can't get between me and my British Boyfriends. Luckily he likes most of the stuff they star in, too. I really love that many of their roles stem from books adapted for film and tv.

Seriously, I'm hard pressed to name any non-British actors I find half as appealing as these

First off, we have Benedict Cumberbatch. Yes, I am totally a Cumberbitch. He's probably most famous right now for two book-related film and tv roles: Smaug from The Hobbit movies, and Sherlock Holmes from BBC's Sherlock. (How adorable is it that his real life parents play his parents on the show? But I digress.) His book-to-film roles include Major Jamie Stewart in War Horse and Peter Guillam in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and the list goes on: Atonement, Starter for Ten, The Other Boleyn Girl, and Murder Is Easy (a Marple mystery). He was also in a National Theatre Live play, Danny Boyle's Frankenstein, where he swapped the role of Victor Frankenstein and The Creature with another Sherlock actor, Jonny Lee Miller (who gets an honorable mention on my British Boyfriends list. I'm not crazy about him, but he'll do!).

Look, he's a bit geeky looking, but have you seen my husband? I definitely have a type. Aside from the cheekbones, the baby blue eyes, and the voice that can pretty much set you on fire (I mean, there's a reason he's been cast as a freaking dragon), best of all, he's a ginger.

Next up, Aidan Turner. He plays Kili in The Hobbit movies, aka The Hot Dwarf that Isn't Richard Armitage. Others may be more familiar with him from The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, where he plays the ex-Shadowhunter and now werewolf, Luke. I first saw him on Being Human, where he plays the vampire roommate, Mitchel. I wish people would give him more mainstream roles so he could be a bit more of a household name (well, in households that are not my own, anyway), but I have to agree there is something in his face that suits him to all of these supernatural creature roles.

Speaking of The Hobbit--who isn't in this film franchise?--this brings us to Richard Armitage, who plays Thorin Oakenshield (let's all say it together: "son of Thráin, son of Thrór, King under the Mountain"). He makes a pretty swoonworthy dwarf, but if you catch him as John Thornton in North & South, you're going to need a fan, some smelling salts, and a couch to faint upon, because damn, he looks good in a cravat and top hat. He also played Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood, a show which sadly got worse as time went on, but I'm happy to watch the first two seasons over and over again to get my fix.
