ALA 2014 Recap + Giveaway

Hi, everyone! Sorry this post is a bit late but I feel like I needed a little time to recover from ALA and the Fourth of July weekend. I can't believe that ALA is over. I had been planning the trip with my friends since the last time ALA was on the west coast (2012). I'll try to keep this recap somewhat brief, though there will be lots of pics and fangirling.

I headed out to Vegas the Friday before the ALA weekend with my friend Crystal from Books Unbound. She was able to get an SUV for the trip which was great because that meant we could take a lot of books home with us. :) I didn't take too many pics of the drive there. It was hot and pretty boring, though we did find a Dunkin' Donuts when we stopped for a bathroom break. And what does one do when faced with a rare on the west coast Dunkin' Donuts? Why buy a dozen of course (not pictures are the munchkins and iced coffee I also bought).

ALA 2014

In my defense, we were also meeting 3 other people in Vegas so this wasn't all for us. There was also a short detour to an outlet center, where I was quite restrained and only purchased one thing (some of my friends were less restrained). We made it to Vegas in about 5 hours and settled in to our lovely suite at the Holiday Inn Resort. Our hotel was only a couple of miles from the convention center and had a full kitchen and 3 pools!

After unpacking we rushed over to the convention center to get our badges and to see if we could catch the last hour or two of the convention floor. The registration line went by very quickly and we were on the floor in no time. I had a couple of books that were really high on my wishlist that I wanted to try to get on Friday. They were Heir of Fire and Mortal Heart which, luckily, I was able to snag that night.

I know everyone always talks about the books at events like these. And don't get me wrong, the books are awesome. But what's really awesome is getting to see all of the publisher booths and speak to the reps. I think I am a little unusual as a book blogger because almost all of my ARCs are digital so I don't have much contact with the actual publishing reps. But it was really nice to meet a lot of them and just chat about what their favorite books are and what they're excited about. I definitely came home with several books I might not have requested on my own but sounded great after speaking with a rep. It was also nice to see that some of the comics publishers had a presence this year (you can see part of the Image booth above) as well as Entangled Publishing, who was attending their first ALA. It was also nice to talk to other bloggers as well as librarians and teachers. There was a lot of standing in line so I made the most of it by getting to know my neighbors.

ALA 2014

Of course there were some great authors in attendance as well. One of my biggest fangirl moments was when we got to meet Ann M. Martin, author of The Babysitter's Club series, which I loved as a child. I think I checked out every copy that the library had when I was a kid. Ann was there signing her new book Rain Reign, and was quite gracious when my friend and I kind of flipped out.

ALA 2014

I also got to meet Jeaniene Frost, author of the Night Huntress series. I am a big fan and have never met her before. I had no idea that she was going to be at ALA so it was a nice surprise to see that she was signing. Her new YA novel, The Beautiful Ashes comes out in August.

ALA 2014

Here is Marie Lu signing her upcoming novel, The Young Elites. The line for Marie Lu was super long but it went by really fast.

ALA 2014

On Friday, Scott Westerfeld was signing his new book Afterworlds.

ALA 2014

And no trip to Las Vegas would be complete without a buffet. We chose the one at The M, which was recommended to us by two Vegas residents. I have to say that it was mighty tasty. Look at those crab legs.

There was more that I didn't get pics of such as roulette, late night swimming, Thai food, lots of iced coffee, and tons of books, authors and awesome book people. If you want to see more pics, please check out my Flickr album. Many thanks to my partners in crime Books Unbound, The Windy Pages, Bookyurt, and Laura N for making it a really great trip. Many thanks as well to all of the wonderful publishers and authors who made the time to talk to us and were calm in the midst of madness.

If you've made it this far - yay! That means you get to see the giveaway we are having. I picked up a few things that I thought you guys might like at ALA. I haven't read any of them yet except for the Lux Beginnings bind-up, which is beautiful and a very fun series. If you'd like a chance to win these books, just fill out the Rafflecopter below. As always, first entry is free. This is for US residents only. Sorry, international friends, but a big box of books will cost a lot to send overseas. We'll have an international giveaway for you guys soon. Thanks for reading and good luck!

Tammara Webber & Abbi Glines Recap + Giveaway

Hi, everyone! I hope the week is going fantastic. It's actually really flying by which is nice. Is it just me or do you start counting down the days until the weekend on Monday? Maybe it's just me but I do love the weekend. This week was broken up by a really fun author event. Barnes & Noble at the Americana hosted Abbi Glines and Tammara Webber on May 6, 2014. Even though I left work a little early, it still took me over an hour to get there (grrr LA traffic). First things first though, I went and got dinner with Alethea at Din Tai Fung. DTF is a really great Chinese dumpling restaurant. I hadn't been to this location before and I was starving, so we ordered all the things.

We were cutting it close by having dinner beforehand but, like I said, starving. We arrived a few minutes after 7pm and grabbed seats (thanks, Aly!).  There was a really good crowd there and it was standing room only. There was no talk beforehand and the ladies launched right into a Q&A session. I'll give you a few tidbits about what I learned during the Q&A.

Tammara has never been recongnized as far as she knows. Abbi says that she isn't usually recognized either but loves going on tour to meet fans. The first time she ever flew was in 2012 when she went to NYC.

Abbi has turned down movie options for her books because she doesn't want the rights to be tied up with a film. She thinks that there is too much story in her series for a movie and is waiting for a TV deal.

Tammara Webber & Abbi Glines
my nails match and i didn't even plan it!

When asked about what it was like going from being a self-published author to signing with a major publisher Abbi said that she had to give up some control over things like covers and pricing on her books. However, she said that giving up that control is worth it to have things like an editor and seeing her books on the shelves of major retailers.

Abbi did not outline her first book, which she said was a bad idea. Now she outlines every book. Tammara does not outline her books.

When asked if they write in chronological order, Tammara said that it depends on the story. She wrote Easy chronologically but not all of her books have been written that way. Abbi says that she writes chronologically because that's how her brain works. When she tries to write out of order, it gets confusing.

Tammara Webber & Abbi Glines

Abbi wants to do another Vincent Boys books but, with her current publishing schedule, isn't sure when that will happen. It will be a prequel story to the series.

Tammara is thinking of writing a book from the point of view from some a secondary character in her books.

Tammara hadn't planned on writing Lucas's book. It wasn't until a year after Easy was published that she started to see and hear Lucas's POV in her mind and decided to write the book.

Abbi said that Rock and Trish will get a novella.

Tammara says that she wanted her son to read the audiobook for Easy. She knew that he could do it but had to convince her publisher to let him audition.

After a few more questions, it was time for the signing. It was all very orderly though there were a lot of people so we had plenty of time to chat while we waited. (Apologies for the less than stellar pics below. It was really busy and I just tried to take a few quick pics while I was in line.)

Here is Tammara signing about 4 copies of Breakable. She was a little quiet but super sweet and friendly.

Here is Abbi signing a poster for me. She's super funny and I love her Southern accent. After the signing we retreated upstairs to Starbucks for a much needed caffeine break. Thanks for B&N for a lovely event. It was very organized and the turnout was great. Both Abbi and Tammara were super nice and charming. I can't wait to read my new books! If you want to see a few more pics, check out my Flickr set for the event.

And because you, dear readers, are always on my mind, I got a few presents for you at the screening, too. I am giving away a signed copy of Breakable by Tammara Webber as well as an Abbi Glines T-Shirt (Large) and a poster signed by Abbi. Giveaway is US only at this time. Book Ball 2014 Recap + Giveaway (US)

Hi, everyone! Happy hump day. I hope you're almost over the hump (I know that sounds totally dirty). Which is how I am going to segue way into my recap of Book Ball 2014, hosted by the lovely authors Christina Lauren at the Barnes & Noble in Huntington Beach. The event boasted an awesome lineup of authors that included Alice Clayton, Sylvia Day, Katy Evans, Ruthie Knox, Christina Lauren, Cara McKenna, Monica Murphy, Kristen Proby, Tiffany Reisz, and Andrew Shaffer. I had heard about the event a while ago and knew that I wanted to go because I love, love Tiffany Reisz. However, due to life happening, we did not decide to go until the day of, but I am really glad that we rallied and went for it.

My partner in crime was Kimberly from The Windy Pages. Like I said, we actually didn't decide to go to the signing until about an hour before it started. And we live about an hour away from the venue, and that's with good traffic. With the crazy rains in LA over the weekend, I wasn't sure if we were going to run into any traffic but I was confident that we would make it for most of the event. We managed to make pretty good time even with the weather and got to B&N at about 2:15pm for the 2pm signing. I thought there was going to be a Q&A or presentation but it was just a straight signing. There had been a get together the night before with the authors and I think they did most of their talking then. Also, with such a large number of authors, I think a full presentation would have been difficult.

We quickly purchased our books (after a lot of deliberation on which ones to buy) and headed back upstairs for the signing. The line was quite long but the B&N was really organized and the staff was very friendly. We ended up skipping part of the line because the authors we were seeing had shorter lines than some of the others.

First up was Tiffany Reisz! Peeps, if you read this blog you know how much I adore Tiffany Reisz. Her books are fantastic and totally racy and I love her to bits. She was super sweet and funny and was not fazed as Kimberly and I fangirled her. We talked bout the next book in the Original Sinner series that comes out later this year about a young, crazy Nora Sutherlin. I can't wait. I had her sign my copies of The Siren and The Prince, and she and I bonded over the fact that The Prince was our favorite book of the series.

Next up was Christina Lauren, the writing duo behind the Beautiful Bastard series. Like an idiot, I had left my Christina Lauren books at home but I bought one for a giveaway and had them sign it. They are always so fun to talk to and it's easy to see that they are good friends. We talked a bit about their new book Sublime that is coming out in a few months. I just received and eARC of that one and they told me to tweet them while I was reading it (unless I hated it). :)

This is my favorite picture of the event. I don't even know what was happening here, but I love it.

The last author we saw was Alice Clayton. I have heard so many good things about Alice and finally picked up Wallbanger to try. Alice was super sweet and was lovely to talk to. I am really excited to finally read one of her books.

After the signing we went for a cheesecake break and ended up coming back to B&N to buy more books from their signed stock. I picked up a book by Kristen Proby and Katy Evans, who were both extremely popular at the signing. All in all it was a really fun signing and we met some great people in line as well. B&N did a fantastic job at the event and everything seemed to run really smoothly. I would definitely go back for another signing. Shout out to A Reading Nurse who we chatted with at the event.

Alright, now it's time for a giveaway. I have a signed copy of Beautiful Beginning by Christina Lauren to give away along with a couple of bookmarks. This is open only to US residents. Good luck!

Reaver by Larissa Ione Release Day Excerpt + Giveaway

Hi, everyone. I am super excited because today is the release day for Reaver, the newest book in Larissa Ione's Lords of Deliverance series. Larissa Ione's books were the first paranormal romances I had ever read and they got me hooked on the genre. I am really excited about this one. Fans have been asking for Reaver's story for a while now and I can't wait to finally read it.

To celebrate, Grand Central Publishing is having a great giveaway that you can enter below. I also have an excerpt to share with you that will hopefully get you excited about this series, too. Enjoy!

REAVER by Larissa Ione
December 17, 2013
Grand Central Publishing Mass Market; $8.00; 978-1-4555-2697-0

Reaver is an angel with a past, a record, and a less-than-heavenly attitude. Powerful enough to fight alongside the fiercest battle angels-and crazy enough to risk his wings on a one-way mission to hell-he's agreed to go where no angel has ever gone before . . . to steal the most seductive and dangerous prize of Satan himself.

Harvester is one of the Fallen, a once-heroic angel who sacrificed her wings to work as an undercover agent in hell. But now her cover has been blown, and she's doomed to an eternity of agonizing torture. Even if Reaver can snatch her away from Satan's lair, even if they can fight their way out of the underworld's darkest depths, there is one thing Harvester can never escape-her newfound thirst for an angel's blood. . .

EXERPT

“R-Reaver?”

Reaver held Harvester’s frail body tight against his as he navigated the final steps of a winding ledge that dropped them into a world of weird. “It’s me. It’s okay. We’re safe.”
Relatively safe, anyway. Relative meaning that they weren’t dead. Yet. He just hoped the same could be said for Tavin, Matt, and Calder. When he’d left them to sneak into Satan’s realm, they’d been engaged in a battle they’d initiated as a diversion. It had been a risky move, and Reaver could only pray they’d make it to the rendezvous point.

A hunter’s horn sounded in the distance and was answered by another, closer horn signal. Satan’s minions hadn’t gained ground, but they were spreading out. Damn. He scanned the landscape of thorny plants, hills of blackened earth and trees, and twisted, abandoned structures. Nothing moved. He looked down at Harvester, and as before when he first saw her hanging over a pit of acid, he felt sick to his stomach. He didn’t like Harvester even though he was grateful for the things she’d done, but she didn’t deserve this; her naked body too thin and mottled with bruises and ligature marks, her once silken black hair tangled and dull, and worst of all, missing her gorgeous green eyes.

Under ideal circumstances, an angel could heal from even the most heinous injuries within hours. But these were far from ideal circumstances, and Harvester’s source of power, her wings, had been severed. Without wings or medical assistance, it could take weeks, even months, for an angel’s body to fully heal.

“I can’t risk healing you more than I did,” he said. “My power isn’t reliable right now, and I could do more harm than good.”

“Reaver,” she croaked, as if he hadn’t spoken. “Why…how…”

“Shh.” He tucked her face into his chest, quieting her. “We’re going to meet up with some friends, and then I’ll answer all your questions.”

Reaver and the assassins had worked out a plan A and a plan B. Plan A had been shot to hell when iron gates had prevented Reaver from getting out of Satan’s realm to the south, where his companions would have been waiting. Now, with demons in pursuit, they were on their way to plan B. Hopefully Tav, Matt, and Calder had realized quickly that Reaver’s escape route had gone bad.

Inhaling the stench of rotten vegetation that permeated this section of Sheoul, he started away from the skeletons of some burned-out buildings and toward a mountain range as expansive as the Rockies. He moved swiftly, outrunning the sounds of pursuit and pausing once to blast a group of imps with a ball of lightning. The sphere struck the leader, and from there sent electrical strikes at each of the surrounding imps, frying them all in a handy eight-for-one.

Harvester slept in his arms, barely stirring when he stopped to listen for anyone following them. By the time they neared the plan B meeting site, Reaver was sure they’d lost the demons— temporarily. Reaver wasn’t naive enough to think they were off the hook. The demons chasing them were only the first wave, the security detail unlucky enough to be guarding the dungeon. Harvester was kept in.

Once Satan got wind of this, if he hadn’t already, Reaver and Harvester were going to have legions of minions on their heels.

A Tryst with Trouble Giveaway (INTL - Ends 9/23)

Back in early 2012, Alethea and I were lucky enough to read a fantastic Regency romance called A Tryst with Trouble by Alyssa Everett. It was so awesome that both us us gave it 5 stars. London, 1820

Lady Barbara Jeffords is certain her little sister didn't murder the footman, no matter how it looks…and no matter what the Marquess of Beningbrough—Ben—might say. She can scarcely help it if his cousin is the only other suspect. In fact, she wants nothing to do with ruggedly handsome Ben; he reminds her of all the insensitive clods who passed her over.

For years Ben has been dogged by painful gossip about his father's rumored homosexuality. His gruff shell hides a passionate nature, and he's also fiercely loyal—which is why he'll never let the clever and beguiling Lady Barbara pin a murder on his cousin.

Sparks fly as the two compete to defend their loved ones. But as strange new clues emerge that neither can decipher alone, they have no choice but to compare notes and sleuth in tandem. A tenuous bond develops that soon faces its toughest challenge when Ben himself becomes a suspect…
