Mine Till Midnight - Review

Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways #1) by Lisa Kleypas
Publication date: 02 October 2007 by St. Martin's Press
ISBN 10/13: 0312949804 | 9780312949808

Category: Adult Historical Romance
Keywords: Historical, romance, siblings, gypsies, ghosts
Format: Hardcover, mass market paperback, ebook

From goodreads:

When an unexpected inheritance elevates her family to the ranks of the aristocracy, Amelia Hathaway discovers that tending to her younger sisters and wayward brother was easy compared to navigating the intricacies of the ton. Even more challenging: the attraction she feels for the tall, dark, and dangerously handsome Cam Rohan.

Wealthy beyond most men's dreams, Cam has tired of society's petty restrictions and longs to return to his -uncivilized- Gypsy roots. When the delectable Amelia appeals to him for help, he intends to offer only friendship-but intentions are no match for the desire that blindsides them both. But can a man who spurns tradition be tempted into that most time-honored arrangement: marriage? Life in London society is about to get a whole lot hotter.

Thuy's review:

This is  my first Lisa Kleypas novel. She’s a big name in historical romance but it’s not a genre I’ve delved into very much yet (preferring the more paranormal stuff). But I picked up the second book in the Hathaway series last weekend at a used book store for $1. Since I hate reading things out of order I knew I had to track down the first book before going any further. Luckily my local library had a copy of Mine Till Midnight on hand and I was able to jump into this one right away.

Mine Till Midnight
is a story about the Hathaway family - a close knit and somewhat unconventional (for their time at least) family. There are four sisters - Amelia, Win, Poppy and Beatrix with the eldest being their brother Leo. Also part of the family is Merripen, a Gypsy who came to the family has a child. Merripen holds an odd place in the family as he’s not quite a brother but he’s not really a servant either. With both parents deceased, it’s up to Amelia and Leo to take care of the family. Unfortunately Leo is on a destructive downward spiral after losing his fiancee to fever several months before.

I have to say, wow. I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did. I loved the historical aspect of the story. There was just enough of it to create a believable setting but not so much that I was bogged down by language or too much historical background. Sexy love scenes, witty dialogue, and an emotional love story made this a book I did not want to put down.

I loved the hero of the story, Cam Rohan. Being a half-blood, he’s never really fit in anywhere. Not with his Gypsy family or with the the proper English society where he currently finds himself. He’s smart and forceful and confident in his ability to do anything, be it run a gambling club, find a missing person or get the woman he loves to marry him. I love that he’s undaunted by Amelia’s stubbornness and pursues her despite her reluctance. He’s a bit wild, his Gypsy half doing its best to uproot his Irish half.

Amelia is the backbone of her family, holding it all together when times get tough. I admire her strength and determination. Not many woman of that era would just walk into a gambling house or brothel but she’s ready to do whatever she has to in order to get the job done. She’s extremely loyal and loves her family beyond all reason. She also takes on way too much responsibility, refusing to ask for or accept any help in taking care of her family. She’s resigned herself to a life of spinsterhood in order to make sure that everyone else has a happy future. She’s also quite frustrating at times. She’s so stubborn and refuses for a long time to see what her own heart is telling her. Luckily Cam isn’t one to give up easily and his dogged pursuit of her is romantic and sweet. They also have fantastic chemistry and the love scenes were extremely sensual and sexy.

I loved watching Cam and Amelia’s relationship develop from physical attraction into a true partnership filled with love, caring and understanding. Cam becomes the person that Amelia can depend on and be vulnerable with (even when she doesn’t want to). In Amelia, Cam finally finds the place where he belongs, his home, his place by her side. I found their story to be ridiculously sweet and romantic and made me want to squeee.

And let’s not forget about Win and Merripen. The sexual tension is high with these two. Theirs seems like an impossible love but nothing is impossible in a romance book. I greatly look forward to reading their story. Thank you, Lisa Kleypas. You have officially made me a historical romance convert.

Winter Wishlist: Week 2 - Great Gifts

Welcome to week 2 of Winter Wishlist, the fun seasonal meme that my co-blogger over at Read Now Sleep Later dreamed up.Week 2 (Dec 13 - 19) is all about great gifts that you want to GIVE. For more info or to sign up, visit the Winter Wishlist page.

Week 1: Write about Books or Bookish Things that you would love to get.
Week 2: Write about Books or Bookish Things that you would love to give.
Week 3: Write about a charity/nonprofit/community group that works with books and/or literacy.

I am a big fan of box sets. They're usually quite economically priced and they're a great way to get someone into a series or author. These are two a few of my faves.
  • The Hunger Games Trilogy  by Suzanne Collins - You knew this one was coming. A great trilogy (though the first is still my favorite). Even though it seems like everyone has read this already, a lot of people have not. I know this because I am constantly getting asked if people can borrow my copies. Give them their own set and make everyone happy.
  • The Black Dagger Brotherhood box set by JR Ward - When I first started this series my friend and I searched high and low for this box set in stores. Eventually we had to cave and get it from Amazon. Perfect for anyone new to paranormal romance/urban fantasy. I love the Brothers!
  • Vampire Academy 1-4 by Richelle Mead - Another great series that you will wish you had a set of after you read the first book.
  • For Life Tea Mug - It's a cliche to say that readers like tea, but they often do. This comes with its own fine mesh tea infuser that fits in the cup - perfect for loose leaf teas. I hate those little infuser balls. My friend has one of these cups and it's awesome.
  • Tea - And of course, some tea to go with your teacup. I am a fan of Teavana, but really, any lovely loose leaf tea will do.

  • Nan Lawson - Love Nan's Etsy shop. She has the cutest prints. I bought myself one of the Piemaker recently. She has lots of other fun prints, including the bookish ones above.
  • Ninja bookmarks - Um, ninjas + books = awesome.

Top Ten Tuesday (7) - Books I Want To Give As Gifts

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature/meme created by the folks over at The Broke and the Bookish. To sign up or find out more about it, visit the Top Ten Tuesday page. This week's topic is Top Ten Seven Books I Want To Give As Gifts.

1. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern - This would be great for anyone but I think I would give it to my friend Mecaila who loves the idea of running away with the circus as much as I do.

2. Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead - Yes, this book/series pops up on a lot of my lists. That's because it is awesome and I love it and want everyone to read it. Not sure who I would give this to. Maybe the friend who doesn't like paranormal stories. I think this could convert them.

3. Matched by Allie Condie - I am getting this for my 13-year-old niece. She's just reading the Hunger Games now and I think she'll really like this.

4. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins - I was totally charmed by this book and highly recommend it. I have bought it for my friend L and convinced my other friend to get it for her best friend. My plot to have everyone read it is working! Muahahahaha!

5. Moon Called by Patricia Briggs - I'd get this for my friend Kimberly because she hasn't read the series yet.

6. The Lost City of Z by David Grann - This book was fascinating and terrifying at the same time. About a famous explorer on his last trip into the Amazon where he was never seen again. Flesh eating insects, harsh weather and hostile natives are only a few of the obstacles they encountered. Grann tries to unfold the mystery of what happened on the mission. I think my brother would enjoy this one.

7. Fables #1 by Bill Willingham & Mark Buckingham - Love this comic book series. Anyone who loves fairy tales should read this. I'd get this for my friend Carrie who is currently obsessed with Once Upon A Time.

Hot Books Blog Giveaway Hop - Signups

February 3-10, 2012

Hi kids! Nite Lite is hosting its first ever giveaway hop! The Hot Books Giveaway Blog Hop will feature "hot" books, generally noted by the book blogging community as 18+.

This can be anything from traditional romance, paranormal romance, YA, contemporary, erotica--anything with a romantic element is game.

This giveaway hop won't have too many rules but we do ask that all giveaways be books or book related (this does include gift cards from Amazon, etc. as well as purchases of books). You can throw in non-book items as long as a book is also included.

If you are a YA site that wishes to participate, you are welcome to do so as long as you don't think your readers will mind the occasional eyeful of... well... you know... hotness.

Ooh la la. Sign up for another hot hop at
www.redhotbooks.com!
Please link up via the Giveaway linky if you'd like to participate.

The code that you need to include in your blog post HTML is below. The place where you actually sign up is at the end of this post.
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.blenza.com/linkies/autolink.php?owner=frootjoos&postid=12Dec2011"></script>

In your post, please include the giveaway hop image as well as the link to the full list of participating blogs (so we can hop). If you want to receive an email with instructions the week before the hop starts, please fill out this short form.

When you link up, write your blog name and also include if your giveaway is US, US/Can or International. It should look something like: Read Now Sleep Later $15 Amazon GC (Intl)

If the images/content you are including in your giveaway are definitely for the more mature reader, please add the notation 18+ before the geographic marker. It should look something like RNSL Nite Lite The Harlot (18+) (US/Can). Blog hoppers can then visit your site at their discretion.

Please keep the process to enter your giveaway as simple as possible.

This hop has a limit of 4 entries per person: 1 mandatory entry and up to 3 optional entries. Your post needs to be up by midnight or reasonably soon after on February 3, 2012. (We mentioned some changes to the hop--unfortunately we cannot get them until after, so we will roll those changes out with a future blog hop.)

We highly recommend signing up for Rafflecopter -- they make collecting contest entries a breeze! ;) Tell them Alethea and Thuy sent you.

**Our hop rules were inspired by Inspired Kathy who hosts some awesome Giveaway Hops at I am a Reader, Not a Writer. She no longer allows Mature/Sexy/18+ giveaways on her clean, family-friendly hops, which we totally understand. We're happy to fill the void... so to speak ;D

We encourage those with family-friendly blogs to skip our hop and head over to hers!

In My Mailbox (11)

image courtesy of a mocha & a latte
In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren. It gives book bloggers the chance to share what they’ve bought/borrowed/received!

Pretty small haul this week. I've been trying to be very good and not buy too many books or borrow too many either. I did go to the library this week but managed to come out with only 2 books. I also got a couple of Christmas themed books which is new for me. It's all part of the seasonal spirit, right?

Bought

Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor by Lisa Kleypas - As you can see, I am slowly becoming a Lisa Kleypas convert. This is the beginning of another series. Not sure if I will read it this year or save it for next year's Krazy Kleypas challenge.

For Review

A Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare - Thank you, Simon & Schuster! S&S posted on twitter about extra arcs of CP. I sent them an email right away and look what came!

Borrowed

Ashfall by Mike Mullin - I spotted this at the library this week. Looks like another good dystopian.

The Future of Us by Jay Asher & Caroline Mackler - I've been dying to read this one! It's going to be my Christmas break reading. Thanks, frootjoos, for letting me borrow this.

A Wallflowers Christmas by Lisa Kleypas - I know Krazy Kleypas isn't until next year but I couldn't resist picking up this short novella at the library. I have already read it and it did not disappoint.

Won

Succubus Revealed by Richelle Mead - This one just made it in at the last minute. I won this ages ago from the Goodreads First Reads program. I wasn't sure if it was ever coming but it showed up today. I had already purchased this via kindle (pre-order, baby!) but was happy to get a physical copy as well. I actually haven't read it yet. I really want to but I am saving it because when I am done with it, it will mean that the series is over. :(

That's all I have this week. What's in your mailbox?
