The time I met Nalini Singh and Nora Roberts + Giveaway

Hola, friends! It's taken me a while but I finally had some time to write up my recap of the RWA 2012 Literacy Autographing Session that took place a couple of weeks ago. RWA is Romance Writers of America and, this year, their conference was held in Anaheim, CA. Every year at the conference they hold a massive autographing session (free to the public) where hundreds or romance authors autograph books with the proceeds going to a literacy organization. This year, the session made over $50,000! Wow, that is a pretty crazy number for 3 hours of autographs. Luckily I don't live too far from Anaheim and I was able to make it to the event. (Warning that this post is gonna be long but you get rewarded with a giveaway at the end)

I got to the convention center around 3:30pm. I made my way up to the ballroom area on the third floor and found that a line had already formed. It wasn't very long (I had just gone to Comic Con the weekend before so everything pales in comparison) and I cheerfully got in line with my fellow romance lovers. The line was pretty uneventful though I did talk to some people about romance authors and, as it neared 5pm, we have some authors and publishers coming out to talk to us in line. By that time, the line had gotten quite long and I could see it snaking behind me.

"From This Day"

When B. J. Clark, manager of the Lakeside Inn, met the new owner, Taylor Reynolds, she was fully prepared to dislike him. She feared--and with good reason--that he planned to transform her lovely, sleepy old hotel into a resort for jet-setters. But when sparks flew between them, B.J. soon found herself torn between her professional antagonism and her growing attraction to the man she had sworn to despise.

"Temptation"

Socialite Eden Carlbough didn't expect running a girls' camp to be easy, but she never thought she'd literally be run up an apple tree by the little monsters--nor did she think she'd come crashing down into the capable arms of orchard owner Chase Elliot. Chase knew he'd caught a windfall when he looked at the woman in his arms. He didn't like being cast as the serpent, but how could he resist when she'd just offered him such forbidden fruit?

Review:

From This Day - 2 stars

This is one of those repackaged 2 for 1 collections of older Nora Roberts stories. Reading From This Day, it’s clear that this was written in another era because there are things in this book that modern romance readers will probably not enjoy. First of all, the male lead Taylor, is a tool. Don’t get me wrong. I love an confident, somewhat arrogant alpha male any day. But Taylor crosses that fine line between confident bad boy and domineering chauvinist. He breezes into town, demanding explanations and threatening changes, all the while calmly telling B.J. that it’s only a matter of time before he gets her into bed. And while I usually appreciate a man who goes after the woman, Taylor was just too forceful and didn't take any of B.J.’s feelings into consideration. There were times, too, where he would flash hot and cold, kissing her passionately one moment and then pushing her away the next. There was an explanation for it at the end but it didn't make much sense to me. He would also have these odd flashes of anger and violence that were never explained. I think part of the problem is that the book is told from B.J.’s point of view so we never get a glimpse of what Taylor is thinking. We have no clue what his internal struggles might be and indeed, we learn almost nothing about his past. Without any context for his actions, I can only take them at face value. It made no sense to me why B.J. would have fallen in love with him.

It’s also strange that that B.J. is is described as being very young looking. Taylor actually mistakes her for a teenager when he first meets her. But then she puts on grown up clothes and everything goes on as normal. Then at the very, very end after all the misunderstandings are understood and they are about to live happily ever after, Taylor stares into her eyes and tells her that she looks like a child, that she has a child’s lips. Ew, creepy.

I’d skip this one unless you’re a Nora Roberts completionist. I didn’t feel any connection between the two main characters and didn't like the male lead at all.

Temptation - 3 stars

The second story in this collection is much more of what I was expecting from Nora Roberts. Set at a girls’ summer camp, it is a quick, sweet read with a little bit of heat to keep it interesting. Eden is a very likable heroine. Once a spoiled socialite, she has lost everything, including her fiancee who ditched her as soon as scandal hit her name. Even though she’s grown up with a silver spoon, she isn’t snobbish or mean. Though not accustomed to work, she doesn’t shy away from working hard and is intent on making the camp succeed and proving herself.

Chase is sexy and just the right amount of confident. He pursues Eden but it never veers into stalker territory. There’s also just something super hot about a guy who outdoors and knows how to use his hands. The romance between Chase and Eden believable and they had some great chemistry.

I also really enjoyed the camp setting. I never got to go to camp as a child but it make me think of those movies from the 80’s set in summer camp, complete with the troublemaker campers and food fights. A very fun, quick read.

Overall:

Averaging the rating for these stories this collection would be 2.5 stars. However, I am bumping it up to 3 stars (since there are no half stars) and because I liked the second story. I recommend skipping From This Day and going straight to Temptation.

Night Tales by Nora Roberts - Review

Nigh Tales (Night Tales #1 & #2) by Nora Roberts
Publication date: originally published 1991, reissued 2005 by Silhouette
ISBN 10/13: 0373285108 | 9780373285105

Category: Adult Romantic Suspense
Keywords: Romance, suspense, mystery, stalker, vigilante
Format: Mass market paperback, eBook

This is an early series by Nora Roberts from the early 90’s. Nora Roberts is sometimes a bit hit and miss for me (especially some of her older stuff) but, for the most part, I tend to enjoy her writing and am willing to give anything by her a try. While neither of these stories blew my socks off they were quick and entertaining reads.

Night Shift

In Night Shift, radio show host Cilla O’Roarke is being stalked by man who claims that she killed someone close to him. Detective Boyd Fletcher is called in on the case and quickly falls for the whiskey-voiced radio celeb. You know, I usually enjoy the bodyguard/cop falling for his ward romances. Though somewhat formulaic, the plot moved quickly and kept me interested throughout. Boyd’s your typical sexy bad boy cop. Cilla but she tries to keep him at arm’s length but that doesn’t last for long. Cilla’s successful and driven, having had to support her and her sister at a young age. I liked her I also wanted to smack her upside the head. She’s being stalked and Boyd keeps asking her if she’s had any jilted lovers or obsessed fans that they can look into. She can’t come up with anyone and the investigation is at a standstill.

***SPOILERS***

***THEY’RE COMING***

****Now it’s no one’s fault but your own if you end up spoiling it for yourself***

It’s not until almost the end of the book when she’s having a fight with Boyd does she blurt out something about a guy who was following her around and claiming that he loved her would die without her. And even after Boyd points out that he fits all the criteria that they’re looking for, she still doesn't think there's a connection! It's a good thing Boyd's around to protect her because she doesn't seem to have much common sense.

***END SPOILERS***

While I wasn’t all that impressed with the mystery in the story, it was suspenseful and the parts written from the stalker’s POV are pretty creepy. I also got a kick out of Cilla managing the radio deck with all of her cassettes. Ah – the 90’s.

Night Shadow

Night Shadow starts about 6 years after Night Shift and is the story of Cilla’s sister, Deb, who is grown up now and is a district attorney. She runs into the vigilante Nemesis one night when he saves her from an attack. She ends of falling for both Nemesis and his alter ego, millionaire Gage Guthrie. This story reminded me a lot of Batman with a slight paranormal twist. Again, this was a bit formulaic and a little less believable than Night Shift. It’s hard to believe that Deb could reconcile herself to quickly to being involved with a man who works outside of the law when she so clearly works within it and believes in its principles. Deb also does something very stupid near the end of the book that seemed out of character. The ending is rather abrupt and it would have been nice to have a couple of pages wrap things up.

What I really found interesting about this story though were the parallels to Roberts’s Eve Dallas series. Go with me on this one. Deb and Eve are both no nonsense workaholics with a strong sense of justice, though Eve is a much more complex and interesting character. Nemesis and Roarke are both cocky, charming, millionaires with secret workrooms where they do their research. Both men have experience in illegal activities. Both even have butlers (personally I prefer Somerset’s cantankerous ways to Frank’s more amiable demeanor). Deb and Nemesis/Gage end up working together to solve a crime, very similar to what Eve and Roarke do in the In Death series. And Deb’s last name is O’Roarke. Coincidence? Maybe or maybe not.

This definitely wasn't my favorite Roberts read.  The stories are somewhat dated and the mysteries are not as exciting as what I usually expect from Roberts.  I’d recommend getting this from the library if you're interested or, better yet, skipping straight ahead to the Eve Dallas series.
